FAQs

Here are all the details

  • How long is a lesson?
Sessions are usually an hour long, and at least once a week at a regular time. Five minutes before the end of a session we will begin to summarise, set homework and agree anything required for the following week.
  • What happens in the first session?
Of necessity this will be a 'get-to-know-you' lesson. We can look at the general areas that you need help with, as well as specific issues if needed. It is an opportunity to start building some understanding of where we want to go and some understanding of what will constitute success.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for sessions to be paid for up-front. Cancellations on the day are still payable. If adequate notice is given there will be no charge.
  • How does the no-obligation first lesson work?
I ask for sessions to be paid for in advance. If after any lesson (including the first) guardian or student is unhappy I will refund the fee. No questions, no quibble. I want all parties to be happy.
  • What happens if I, the student, am ill?"
We all get sick at times. Fact. I don't believe you should be penalised if this happens. If you are ill, then no fee will be due. If you have already paid then I will hold over the payment for the next lesson or if you wish I will return your payment. If you have a lot of illness, then we can discuss how we might work going forwards.
  • What happens if you, the tutor, are ill or need to cancel?"
I will always give you as much notice as possible if I need to cancel. I will offer you an alternative mutually convenient time if this is possible. Obviously, you never have to pay if I cancel the session.
  • What about holidays?
All I ask is that you give me as much notice as you can about holidays. I will do the same for you!
  • Will there be any homework?
Yes, if you (or your parents) want; no if you don't!
  • What is your COVID-19 position?
I am double vaccinated and I perform a lateral flow test twice a week. If you wish me to wear a mask when we are face-to-face then please ask; I will be only too glad to oblige. If you require me to wear a mask or take any other precautions whilst in your home, again please ask and I will oblige.
  • Are you DBS checked?
Yes - I have an Enhanced DBS check.
  • What technology do I need for online sessions?
I conduct sessions over Zoom. I strongly recommend a desktop or laptop for you. Whilst tablets and iPhones do work, the screen sizes are too small for efficient work and I really need to see your face! Other requirements are pen and paper, a drink at the ready, and as few distractions as possible. I'll be turning my phone off - I'd like you to do that too please!
  • What do I need for face-to-face sessions?
A pen and paper, a drink at the ready, any text books you want, and as few other distractions as possible. I'll be turning my phone off - I'll be asking you to do the same!
